G'day, Dave here.
Speaker:Welcome to stories of a faithful God for kids.
Speaker:It's great to have you back for our second episode from the Book of Exodus.
Speaker:Just a quick heads up before we start.
Speaker:There are actually going to be two kids
Speaker:episodes this week.
Speaker:The next one will come out on Thursday morning
Speaker:if you're roughly on the australian side of the planet.
Speaker:And it's probably Wednesday afternoon if you're on the other side of the planet.
Speaker:Adults, the next longer deep dive episode in stories of a faithful God is coming on my
Speaker:Monday morning, the australian side or Sunday afternoon.
Speaker:If you're on the other side of the world.
Speaker:Don't miss out on that.
Speaker:It's where God suddenly reveals himself in a stunning way at Mount Sinai.
Speaker:It's going to be great.
Speaker:Did you know that God loves using weakness to
Speaker:show his power? He loves using things that seem silly to
Speaker:everyone else to show how wise he is.
Speaker:He loves to win just when everyone thinks he's
Speaker:lost.
Speaker:Do you remember the story we looked at with
Speaker:Elijah? There was a big competition between God and
Speaker:Baal.
Speaker:Baal had 450 prophets and God only had one.
Speaker:Baal's prophets prayed for Baal to send fire all day.
Speaker:God's prophet only prayed for about 30 seconds.
Speaker:Baal's prophets had a dry sacrifice that was sitting on dry wood ready to catch fire.
Speaker:God's prophet poured water all over his sacrifice and wood until it was soaked
Speaker:through.
Speaker:It seemed like God would lose big time.
Speaker:It seemed like God was weak and silly.
Speaker:But then he was the one who sent fire blasting
Speaker:down from the sky.
Speaker:And everyone knew that he is the one true God.
Speaker:In Exodus, chapter two, God looks weak.
Speaker:It looks like he's about to lose.
Speaker:But that is when you know something's about to happen.
Speaker:Get ready for our next episode of stories of a faithful God for kids.
Speaker:At the end of the last show, it seemed like Pharaoh was about to win at destroying God's
Speaker:people.
Speaker:He'd tried lots of things to stop God keeping
Speaker:his promise.
Speaker:Remember, God had promised to make the
Speaker:israelite family enormous.
Speaker:Pharaoh tried to stop that, but none of his
Speaker:plans had worked.
Speaker:Now he's come up with a really deadly plan.
Speaker:He's told his own people, the Egyptians, to throw every israelite baby boy into the river
Speaker:Nile.
Speaker:The Nile river is what keeps Egypt alive.
Speaker:If you look at a satellite photo of Egypt, it's all desert except where the Nile runs.
Speaker:And all along its banks, it's green and beautiful and there are lots of farms.
Speaker:The Nile usually brings life.
Speaker:But now pharaohs made it a place of death.
Speaker:In Exodus chapter two, we zoom in on the home of one israelite family.
Speaker:Somethings happening there that would normally be a time of big celebration, a time of
Speaker:happiness and parties.
Speaker:Theyve just had a baby.
Speaker:If you're an older brother or sister, I don't know if you remember when your baby brother or
Speaker:sister was born.
Speaker:Maybe afterwards you could talk to your
Speaker:parents about what it was like when you were born.
Speaker:For this family, though, there's no celebrating.
Speaker:Instead, it's terrifying because their baby is a boy, which means the Egyptians are going to
Speaker:want to throw him in the river.
Speaker:In verse two of chapter two, it says how his
Speaker:mum became pregnant and gave birth to a son.
Speaker:She saw how wonderful the baby was and she hid
Speaker:him for three months.
Speaker:You can just imagine this mum looking at her
Speaker:newborn son and thinking, I'm gonna do whatever it takes to save my boy.
Speaker:But for the next few months, every time someone walks past the house, every time
Speaker:there's a knock on the door, she'd be scared of who it is.
Speaker:After three months, he's getting too big to hide.
Speaker:So she comes up with a plan.
Speaker:She takes a basket and makes it into a tiny
Speaker:boat.
Speaker:Verse three says this.
Speaker:So she got a basket made of reeds and covered it with tar so that it would float.
Speaker:She put the baby in the basket.
Speaker:Then she put the basket among the tall grass
Speaker:at the edge of the Nile river.
Speaker:Wait, where did she put it?
Speaker:At the edge of the Nile river.
Speaker:That's a terrible place, isn't it?
Speaker:That's the place of death.
Speaker:That's where all the baby boys are being
Speaker:thrown.
Speaker:Why would she try and hide her son there?
Speaker:Hmm? By the way, before we go any further, there's
Speaker:something that just has to be said.
Speaker:I know some of you will have seen the movie
Speaker:Prince of Egypt.
Speaker:In that movie, the mum pushes the basket out
Speaker:into the river and it gets attacked by hippos and crocodiles.
Speaker:Let's be really clear.
Speaker:That is not what happens at all.
Speaker:The basket is in the water, but it's surrounded by tall reeds or grass that holds
Speaker:it in place.
Speaker:It's not going anywhere.
Speaker:It's in a hiding place.
Speaker:More than that, theres someone watching the
Speaker:basket.
Speaker:Verse four tells us that the babys sister
Speaker:stood a short distance away.
Speaker:She wanted to see what would happen to him.
Speaker:So even though this seems like a crazy place to hide the baby, the place where baby boys
Speaker:are being thrown to their death, the mums being careful, shes hiding her son in the tall
Speaker:grass.
Speaker:The basket's waterproof.
Speaker:The sisters watching from a distance.
Speaker:And then disaster strikes.
Speaker:An Egyptian comes along for a swim.
Speaker:One of the very people who's been ordered to
Speaker:kill the israelite boys.
Speaker:And not just any Egyptian.
Speaker:This is the daughter of the king of Egypt herself.
Speaker:The princess of the royal family.
Speaker:If any Egyptians would be most afraid of the
Speaker:Israelites, it'd be the royal family.
Speaker:Because they've got the most to lose.
Speaker:There's almost no more deadly enemy.
Speaker:Who could have turned up at the river that
Speaker:day.
Speaker:It's okay, though.
Speaker:The basket's hidden.
Speaker:But then disaster strikes again.
Speaker:The princess sees the basket in the tall grass.
Speaker:She sends one of her servants to get it.
Speaker:This is terrible.
Speaker:She takes the basket.
Speaker:She lifts the lid.
Speaker:And she sees the baby boy.
Speaker:He's crying.
Speaker:Immediately, she knows this is a hebrew baby.
Speaker:Remember, Hebrew is another word for
Speaker:israelite.
Speaker:This is everything the mom's been working so
Speaker:hard to not let happen.
Speaker:Here's an Egyptian.
Speaker:The daughter of the guy who's commanded the death of her son.
Speaker:She's now holding the baby at the Nile river.
Speaker:The very place where the Egyptians were meant
Speaker:to throw the babies.
Speaker:All she has to do is let go.
Speaker:Everything seems lost, except God's in charge.
Speaker:And at this very moment, when everything seems
Speaker:so bad, when the israelite position looks so weak.
Speaker:Where even God might seem to be really weak.
Speaker:We discover that God's been working all along.
Speaker:The very person who seems like the worst person to come along.
Speaker:The king's daughter.
Speaker:Well, God's actually made sure that she's the
Speaker:perfect person to save this child.
Speaker:Suddenly we see just how clever God is.
Speaker:Verse six says the king's daughter opened the basket and saw the baby boy.
Speaker:He was crying, and she felt sorry for him.
Speaker:She said, this is one of the hebrew babies.
Speaker:She doesn't want to kill the baby.
Speaker:She wants to save him.
Speaker:Then things get even better.
Speaker:Remember how the baby sister's been keeping an
Speaker:eye on her brother? Well, now she thinks really quickly.
Speaker:She must see that the princess is not about to kill her brother.
Speaker:So she runs up to her.
Speaker:In verse seven, she says, would you like me to
Speaker:find a hebrew woman to nurse the baby for you? In other words, feed the baby, take care of
Speaker:him.
Speaker:The princess likes this idea.
Speaker:So the sister runs off.
Speaker:And who does she get to look after the baby?
Speaker:Her mum.
Speaker:The baby's mum.
Speaker:And the princess says to the mum in verse nine.
Speaker:Take this baby and nurse him for me.
Speaker:I will pay you.
Speaker:Whoa.
Speaker:Hang on a second.
Speaker:We started this passage with the mum having to hide the baby, terrified that one of the
Speaker:king's people would come to kill him.
Speaker:Now she gets to care for her own son under the
Speaker:protection of the king's own daughter.
Speaker:Not only that, she's actually being paid to do
Speaker:it out of the king's daughter's own money.
Speaker:This is so great.
Speaker:And here's another funny little thing.
Speaker:Did you notice that the king only wanted to
Speaker:kill the israelite boys? It's like he thinks, ah, they're the only ones
Speaker:who are going to cause me any problems.
Speaker:They're the ones who become soldiers and
Speaker:fight.
Speaker:But even in that, God's turned everything on
Speaker:its head.
Speaker:Do you remember last week, who kept the hebrew
Speaker:boys safe? It was two women, the israelite midwives,
Speaker:Shiphra and Puah.
Speaker:And today it's the mum protecting her son.
Speaker:And the pharaoh's daughter.
Speaker:And the quick thinking sister.
Speaker:Even as the king's trying to get rid of all the boys, God keeps stopping his plan with
Speaker:girls and women.
Speaker:Then, just when you think it can't get any
Speaker:more amazing, it does, because something happens.
Speaker:As the boy gets bigger, he isn't going to keep living with his family in slavery.
Speaker:Listen to verse ten.
Speaker:After the child had grown older, the woman
Speaker:took him to the king's daughter.
Speaker:She adopted the baby as her own son.
Speaker:Whoa.
Speaker:This kid's become the son of the princess.
Speaker:He's living in the royal palace.
Speaker:This is so not what the king was hoping for.
Speaker:He wanted the israelite boys dead.
Speaker:Now there's one living in his home, which
Speaker:means in the future, he could become a part of the government.
Speaker:It could possibly even mean he might even become pharaoh.
Speaker:The king of Egypt.
Speaker:This kid is now perfectly placed to one day
Speaker:save all the Hebrews or Israelites from their slavery.
Speaker:Can you see how God's taken a situation that looked like a disaster and turned it into
Speaker:something fantastic, a situation that looked like death, but he turned it into salvation.
Speaker:That's what God loves to do.
Speaker:This is just a small example, and it points to
Speaker:when God was going to do it in the most amazing way possible.
Speaker:When Jesus died on the cross, all his enemies thought it was over.
Speaker:All the fuss that Jesus had made, the way he'd challenged them and accused them of not really
Speaker:following God.
Speaker:They laughed at him and teased him.
Speaker:They thought they'd won.
Speaker:His disciples thought everything was over,
Speaker:too.
Speaker:Everything they'd hoped for, all the things
Speaker:they were so excited about with Jesus, all the dreams they had of what they thought he'd do
Speaker:now.
Speaker:They thought it was all gone, finished.
Speaker:Dead.
Speaker:As dead as Jesus lifeless body that was taken
Speaker:down and placed in the tomb.
Speaker:What they didn't realize until later was that
Speaker:when Jesus died, it wasn't a moment of defeat.
Speaker:He wasn't weak.
Speaker:He hadn't lost.
Speaker:In fact, it was the moment of his victory over
Speaker:sin and death.
Speaker:Sin and death are our greatest enemies.
Speaker:We have no power to stop them.
Speaker:But when Jesus looked at his weakest, nailed
Speaker:to wood, unable to move, bleeding everywhere, being laughed at by his enemies, that's the
Speaker:moment when Jesus won.
Speaker:Sometimes you might feel like God is losing,
Speaker:like everything's gone bad, like people are laughing at God and Jesus.
Speaker:But don't panic when things look at their worst.
Speaker:You know God is able to do powerful things.
Speaker:In fact, even today, the country where the
Speaker:most people are turning away from sin and putting their trust in Jesus is a country
Speaker:where it's illegal to do that, where you can even be killed for doing that.
Speaker:It looks like Jesus has lost there, but actually that's where Jesus is doing his most
Speaker:powerful work.
Speaker:So don't ever panic.
Speaker:Trust the faithful God, especially when things look bad.
Speaker:Back in Egypt, the boy has been given a name, Moses.
Speaker:As he grows up, it seems like God's put him in the perfect position to save his people.
Speaker:Suddenly though, disaster strikes and Moses will have to flee for his life.
Speaker:But that's a story for next time.
Speaker:See you then.
